Like Wild Cherry, they have what are called extrafloral nectaries - the little pale blobs at the base of each leaf (they are bright red in Wild Cherry). They do indeed secrete nectar which attracts the kind of carnivorous insects that can keep caterpillars away. So are in fact a fascinating defence mechanism.
